Luxe Matchstick Striker DIY
Matches! Can you ever have enough? I like to keep some in nearly every room of the house, for function, AND because they are just pretty. It’s a great way to add a pop of color or earthy texture, like these wooden matchsticks…
Gone are the days of restaurant matchboxes! There are so many beautiful ways to store them. Nearly any vessel can be transformed into a matchstick holder. And to make it equal parts utilitarian, I am going to show you how to add a striker so you can have everything tidy in one package.
If you remember from my snake bathroom post, I have a vintage perfume bottle holding walnut matchsticks beside my Lavender Skye candle.
So let’s dive into this VERY easy DIY, shall we? As soon as you get started, I promise, you’ll kiss your ugly lighter goodbye.
Supplies needed:
Loose matchsticks. These are available in multiple sizes and colors. I recommend going with a longer size if you aren’t sure which size you need because you can always cut them shorter if needed. I ordered mine in walnut here. Be aware that these are not all created equal. Some are super flimsy. The longer the match, the more likely it is to break. Also, buy extras! You’ll need them before you know it.
Match strike paper. This is the super neat part. This is basically sand paper with an adhesive backing. I found mine here.
A bottle or jar of your choice. Old spice jars, antique perfume bottles, apothecary jars…all make great match holders. Look for something transparent. A stopper isn’t necessary, but if you want to add one, cork comes in a variety of sizes (available at craft stores).
Scissors
Simply cut the strike paper to fit the bottom or side of your container, and stick it on! One sheet provides plenty till make extra bottles. Holiday gifts, anyone?!
Fill with matches and you’re done!
It looks soooo much better than a lighter or matchbook with advertisements!
